Description

Hawker Demon (A1-16)

22 Squadron RAAF

RAAF Base Richmond, 1936

The Demon exemplified the refined design of the biplane fighter in the pre-War period. The RAAF purchased a total of 64 Demons, with ten of these configured for training and target towing. Entering service in 1935, 22 Squadron was one of five Squadrons to operate the type and was one of the few RAAF pre-War squadrons to carry unit marking (blue bands on the rear fuselage).

Demon A1-16 served with 22 Squadron from 1936 unit late 1939 by which time the Demon was considered obsolete and the type was being withdrawn from the squadron’s service. During World War 2 the Demon were used in secondary roles such as training, communications and target towing.

The only complete surviving example of an RAAF Demon is on display at RAAF Museum Point Cook. It was recovered in 1977 from the remote mountainous area in Tasmania where it had crashed in 1937.
